Meet the Authors of the Mini Adventure Series Guide Books
Which holds the greater passion — photography or cycling? Elle might say that she rides to photograph! Riding the backroads provides a perpetual canvas for photographing old barns, abandoned houses, all sorts of critters, clips of nature, and the slowly vanishing farmscene.
Bike touring the Cotswolds in England was where Elle got the inspiration to publish a guide book. On this tour she quickly learned the importance of having a good map to accompany the cue sheet when heading out on totally unfamiliar roads! To navigate around the Cotswolds, Elle purchased several wonderful guide books and the plan to produce a book for Knoxville started incubating. After working out the details, Elle and Jon Livengood ventured on a 3-year project to produce 3 guide books for the Mini Adventure Series — Bicycling Routes Around Knoxville, TN; Bicycling Routes Around Chattanooga and North Georgia, and Off Road Trail Systems in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville and the Tri-cities of Tennessee.
Jon Livengood’s roots run deep in mountain biking. In the early 90’s, Jon started riding mountain bikes while attending UT in Knoxville. He quickly moved into racing and began competing in cross country, 12-hour and 100 mile races, winning the Tennessee State Series multiple times. In addition to mountain bike racing, Jon competed in cyclocross and road races throughout the southeast. Always looking for a new adventure, Jon main interest is gravel riding and bikepacking races. When not riding bikes, Jon fill his time as the Alternative Transportation Engineer for the City of Knoxville.
Working as a team, the authors combine their passion for bicycling with their technical skills to self-publish guide books for the adventurer. As a graphic designer and photographer, Elle contributes to the book’s layout, design and gallery of pictures while Jon’s mapping and engineering skills create detailed maps explicit to the needs of a bicyclist.
Together, Elle and Jon have ventured out on their bikes to tour the Blue Ridge Parkway; Skyline Drive with a loop over and up Massanutten Mountain; Vermont’s Green Mountains; West Virginia’s Alleghany Mountains; Amish country in Pennsylvania; and RAGBRAI (the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa).
This past year, Elle and Jon helped develop the routes for the Jellico to Chattanooga section for US Bicycle Route 21. They enjoyed discovering new roads to ride and Elle added more photos to her collection!
If you live in Tennessee or come to visit, they hope you’ll check out their guide books — they’re designed to help you discover some of the best scenic backroads and off road trails in Tennessee!
